The floating market takes shape amid a flutter of torches and spellfire, each pinprick of light tailed by its glittering reflection in the river beneath. The sun is still below the horizon, though hints of peach and copper streak the underside of the cloudlands, hanging far above the clutter of our market. Monstrous shadows slip from the predawn gloom, gliding with the current toward the growing city upon the water, only to reveal themselves as houses and workshops, food stalls and vendors’ platforms.
I used to watch the floating market arrive every month. Riverfolk from leagues away converge upon the floodplains below the temple, steering their homes by sail and oar and pole across the broad, slow river as it spills over its banks into the forest-sea. In mere hours, the gentle curve of the river becomes a bustling city, each solitary barge of reeds joining together in a single teeming, intricate whole. It has always thrilled me, watching the transformation of my world—but every time, the thrill pales a little more against the torture of not being able to enjoy the market with the rest of my people.
This is the first time I’ve been on the river during the mooring in years. The view from the temple sanctum is quiet and remote—from there I cannot smell the charcoal and peat as the cooks and bakers heat their ovens, cannot hear the laughter of the children still too young to help their parents with the ropes, cannot feel the pulsing syncopation of feet and currents shifting the floating market streets underfoot.
My memories before the temple are dim at best, but once I was one of those children. The smell of grilling meat and spice bread meant I would get a treat if I was well behaved; the laughter was the sound of my friends calling me to join them at play; and the footsteps that pounded up and down the thick reed streets were mine. Some years back, I tried sneaking into the market in a handmaiden’s borrowed clothing. But whatever ease and safety I’d felt as a child in this place had long since bled away—I barely made it down one street before the crowds pressed in so close that I had to flee, straight into the panicked protection of the guards searching for me.
Now, I’m alone.

J'ai lu ce roman dans le cadre du bookclub de Ezeekat. J'ai des sentiments un peu partagés sur ce roman... D'un côté, je le trouve très réussi et, de l'autre, sans y trouver vraiment de longueurs, je l'ai trouvé un peu long.
J'ai été complètement charmée par l'univers, par le système de magie qu'on trouve sur cette planète. J'ai adoré en découvrir plus sur les prophéties et les divinités du monde d'en bas. La dualité présentée entre le monde de North, dans le ciel, très avancé technologiquement et celui de Nimh, entièrement basé sur la magie et qui pense que le monde de North est le monde des Dieux. Le monde de Nimh a l'air plutôt hostile mais on comprend peu à peu pourquoi grâce à la prophétie entourant la divinité. J'ai hâte de découvrir le monde de North en profondeur dans le prochain tome. Les mondes et leurs histoires sont vraiment très bien construites et j'ai vraiment apprécié en apprendre plus sur tous les aspects de la religion et de la magie du monde de Nimh.
J'ai absolument adoré le personnage de North, prince d'en haut. Il est tellement gentil et il essaye vraiment de comprendre et de faire attention aux autres, à leurs coutumes et leur culture alors que tout les oppose, lui et les habitants de ce monde. J'ai malheureusement moins accroché au personnage de Nimh, déesse d'en bas. Elle était tout de même intéressante à suivre et les dilemmes auxquels elle doit faire face sont plutôt intrigants et complexes. Je l'a trouve tout simplement beaucoup moins attachante que North, même si, j'ai commencé à plus l'apprécier vers la fin du roman.
C'est un roman où il se passe beaucoup de choses tout en prenant vraiment son temps pour développer son intrigue et son univers. Et j'ai donc eu un sentiment assez bizarre concernant le rythme du livre... J'étais extrêmement attachée aux personnages et je voulais passer du temps avec eux mais pourtant, des fois, j'avais un peu l'impression de m'ennuyer. Mais je ne ressentais néanmoins pas de longueurs en tant que telles dans l'écriture ou même dans l'intrigue. C'était donc un peu bizarre...
Un point extrêmement positif est la diversité présentée dans le roman. Les orientations sexuelles et amoureuses sont variées, l'idée du "couple" est remis en question. Et chaque "différence" n'est pas discutée mais acceptée comme allant de fait, et ça c'est vraiment super de voir des personnages dont le genre et la sexualité existe simplement, sans remise en question perpétuelle de sa légitimité par la société. C'était rafraîchissant !
La fin était folle ! Il se passe des tonnes de choses et j'ai été vraiment très surprise de la fin. J'arrêtais pas de me dire : "Non... Nooooon ?! Mais, c'est pas possible ?!". C'était très chouette de finir sur une note aussi inattendue. J'ai aussi développé une centaine de théorie sur chacun des personnages, sur des complots possibles et sur les prophéties, de quoi rendre fou car il va falloir attendre encore un moment avant la sortie du tome 2. J'ai donc plutôt hâte de découvrir comment va se dérouler la suite de l'histoire
Somme toute c'était un plutôt bon roman de fantasy avec un univers extrêmement bien construits et des personnages plutôt attachants mais je suis tout de même loin du coup de cœur... Ce n'est pas mon préféré de l'autrice Amie Kaufman, que je commence à avoir bien découvert, mais je suis heureuse de l'avoir lu en duo avec Meagan Spooner que je ne connaissais pas du tout.
